YouTube, the most used and the largest video content and sharing platform use multiple algorithms to filter the content. Restricted Mode on YouTube helps to prevent showing mature videos on the YouTube platform for the particular account. If you are using a common account with your parents or children, then you can use this Enable or Disable restricted mode feature.
Think of a situation where you are watching some funny content on the YouTube platform and all of a sudden there is a potentially objectionable video start playing. Here comes the restricted mode feature to rescue you. It screens out all such content using their advanced content filtering algorithms. This feature is one of the most used parental control options.
You can enable or disable safe search or restrict mode on both laptop and YouTube mobile app. We have listed down both the ways along with the screenshots for easy reference. So without much ado, let’s jump into the step by step guide.
Enable or Disable Restricted Mode on YouTube:
Step 1: Open your favorite web browser on the laptop and open YouTube. Sign in with your Google account.
Step 2:Go to the profile circle-like icon at the top right part of the web page and click on it.
Step 3: Now scroll down a bit and at the end of the option, you should be able to find Restricted Mode option. Tap on that option. Refer to the screenshot below.
Step 4: Use the toggle button beside the ACTIVATE RESTRICTED MODE option to enable the restricted mode. If you are OK to check out the restricted content as well, turn off this option.
YouTube provides lock restrict mode setting as well to prevent others from disabling or enabling restrict mode. If you select the lock option (you will get this setting along with restrict mode setting), one has to enter the username and password of that account to disable the lock.
Note that this setting is only applicable to that particular browser or device you have enabled this option. On the other devices, you are continued to get without any filters or content restrictions.
On the YouTube Android Mobile App:
Step 1: Open the YouTube app on your Android smartphone.
Step 2: Click on the Profile option at the top right corner of the app screen. Now tap on the Settings option from the menu.
Step 3: Now click on the General option under Settings.
Step 4: Scroll down a bit and you will be able to see Restricted Mode option with the toggle button. Just tap on the button to enable or disable the restricted mode.
Voila! You can just enable or disable the restricted mode by just tapping the toggle button above. Set this restricted mode option on all those devices which are used by your children.
Here is a short video from the creators of YouTube itself on Restricted mode feature:
While uploading the content, publishers will get an option to enter the age-restriction for that content. If they’ve selected the age restriction as 18 years or older to view it, you just need to login with your Google account to verify that you are 18+ age. Also, such videos may not appear in certain section of the YouTube.
Note that this restrict mode filter is automatic and may not be 100% accurate to filter out the inappropriate content. But as per our experience, it works perfectly and blocked the major adult content available on YouTube.
YouTube has hell lot of videos. Almost 5 billion videos are being watched on this platform and over 300 hours of content being uploaded each and every day. It is obviously not possible to tag the mature content manually. YouTube uses video titles, metadata, description, user comments and age restrictions set by the publishers to screen out such content.
Enable the restrict mode on YouTube and have a safe search experience. If you have any difficulties in enabling or disabling this restrict mode, let us know through comments. We will be glad to help you out.
