Today we are going to talk about DPI. We will explain how you can check DPI on your Windows or Mac device. We will also give you details about how to determine the best DPI to use for your prints. Finally, we will explain how you can change DPI. let’s get started.

How to Check the DPI of an Image

If you often deal with images, you may know that print resolution is important. This is because greater print resolution results in high-quality images and that is exactly what we want. If you want to have great images, you need to know how to check and change DPI which represents print resolution.

What is Print Resolution or DPI?

DPI or Dots per inch is a unit that is used to measure print resolution. DPI simply means the number of dots of ink per inch deposited by a printer on a piece of paper. For example, 200 DPI means that the printer will output 200 tiny dots of ink to fill every inch of the paper. It is important to make sure that you sent the DPI depending on what you are printing.

Why is DPI Important?

It is necessary to understand and know how to change DPI because of two reasons. Firstly, it determines the quality of your printout. A higher DPI value results in a higher quality print out. The standard DPI that most home printers can output is 300.

The second reason why DPI matters is that it determines the size of your image. The resolution of a digital image is described in pixels and DPI represents the resolution of prints. It is important to remember that DPI is equal to pixels. For example, if a 9-inch wide image has a resolution of 200 DPI it means that it has 1800 pixels.

What is the Best DPI to use?

Before selecting the DPI that you are going to use, you need to ask yourself one question: “How far is the image going to be from the viewer?” For images that you hold or view at a close distance such as brochures, magazines, or photos, 300 DPI is a good resolution.

On the other hand, if you want to print an image on a large scale, it is better to use a lower DPI. Images such as billboard posters use a lower DPI. This is because the image will be viewed from a further distance as compared to magazines. So suppose your image is 2400 pixels and you use 20 DPI, this means that the billboard poster will be 120 inches wide.

The rule is to set the DPI depending on the distance of the image. Therefore, the further the image, the lower the DPI.

Therefore, keep in mind that as DPI changes, the pixels change as well. This leads to a change in the size of the print. So you need to make sure to set the DPI of your image accordingly.
